Chihuahua Coats & Sizes

There are two varieties of Chihuahua – the Smooth Coat (short haired) and the Long Coat. Both the Smooth and the Long Coats have their special attractions, are equally easy to keep clean and well groomed. The UK Kennel Club considers smooth and long coated Chihuahuas two distinct breeds.

Chihuahuas of either coat type may be recognized as either "apple head" or "deer head" Chihuahuas, particularly in the United States. Apple heads have rounded heads, close-set eyes, and relatively short ears and legs. Deer heads have flat-topped heads, more widely set eyes, larger ears, and longer, more slender legs. This can very due to the Chihuahuas uniqueness. While deer heads were popular in the mid-twentieth century, current breed standards can be either “deer head” or “apple head”. Both are equally popular, and both conform to the breed standards.

Long-Coat Chihuahua:

The long-coat Chihuahua also commonly referred to as a long haired Chihuahua is one of two officially recognized varieties. Long-hairs can come in many different colors, and their coat length can be very long or sometimes only slightly longer than a smooth-coat. The long-hair can be an apple-head, a dear-head, and may have long legs or short legs. All are acceptable!

Smooth-Coat Chihuahua:

The smooth-coat Chihuahua or short-hair is the other officially recognized variety of the Chihuahua. Short hairs can come in many different color combinations, and like the long-hair, the short-hair can have an apple-head, and deer-head, long legs or short legs. Again, all are acceptable.

In either case, if you are looking for a magnificent, sweet-natured, beautiful/handsome, well-bred and healthy Chihuahua puppy, you have come to the right place!
